Depth First Traversal

There are 4 ways to do a depth first traversal, depends on how you would like to do it.

Define Node

static class Node {
    int value;
    Node left, right;
}

Depth First Recursive Traversal (Pre-order)

static boolean depthFirstTraversal_preOrder(Node node) {
    if (node == null) return true;
    if (!visit(node)) return false;
    if (!depthFirstTraversal_preOrder(node.left)) return false;
    if (!depthFirstTraversal_preOrder(node.right)) return false;
    return true;
}

Depth First Recursive Traversal (In-order)

static boolean depthFirstTraversal_inOrder(Node node) {
    if (node == null) return true;
    if (!depthFirstTraversal_inOrder(node.left)) return false;
    if (!visit(node)) return false;
    if (!depthFirstTraversal_inOrder(node.right)) return false;
    return true;
}

Depth First Recursive Traversal (Post-order)

static boolean depthFirstTraversal_postOrder(Node node) {
    if (node == null) return true;
    if (!depthFirstTraversal_postOrder(node.left)) return false;
    if (!depthFirstTraversal_postOrder(node.right)) return false;
    if (!visit(node)) return false;
    return true;
}

Depth First Iterative Traversal

static boolean depthFirstIterativeTraversal(Node root) {
    Stack<Node> stack = new Stack<>();
    stack.push(root);
    while(!stack.empty()) {
        Node node = stack.pop();
        if (node == null) continue;
        if (!visit(node)) return false;
        stack.push(node.right);
        stack.push(node.left);
    }
    return true;
}
